Fijian Gata War Club with All-Over Carved Design
It is rare to find a Fijian gata club with such fine all-over carved design. I love the juxtaposition of the gnarled terrain on one side and the precise and orderly boxed patterns on the other. As you can see the design covers the top edge of the club and spur as well. This gata comes from the estate of Peter Keller, longtime director of the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. It dates to the early/mid 19th century, is 42” (106.6 cm) in height and sells for $7000.
