Solomon Island Wicker Shield, New Georgia-Melanesian Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a very old example of a Solomon Island wicker shield. With its rounded top and bottom it probably comes from Florida (Nggela) or Guadalcanal Island. Near the base of the larger rounded bottom is the design of the frigate bird. On the reverse are two loops which would have been fitted with a hand strap. This is an older, used example with an aged patina and some minor losses at the top and bottom. It dates to the late 19th century, is 29 ½” (75 cm) in height and sells for $3200.
