Massim Gobaela Presentation Spatula, New Guinea Art, Oceanic Tribal Art
This elegant object is a Massim presentation lime spatula “gobaela.” Such pieces were used more as a wealth item to be exchanged than as a working lime spatula. The value primarily resided in the numerous small shell discs lashed to the top of the crescent. This example is very large with a full complement of shell discs and an aged brown glossy patina. The spatula is 19 ¾” (50.1 cm) in height and sells for $6000. Questions?
