Karawari River Yipwon Figure-Douglas Newton-New Guinea Art
This is an ancient pre-contact, stone-carved yipwon figure from the Alamblak culture, Upper Karawari River, Papua New Guinea collected by Nils Madsen, ex. Douglas Newton and ex. Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede. I published this piece in my “Collecting New Guinea Art” catalog of 2013. In that Virginia-Lee Webb comment: It is not known when Nils Madsen obtained the sculpture or when Douglas purchased it. Douglas was with him in Papua New Guinea in July 1967. Nils and Mary Madsen died there in an airplane crash on July 28, 1968 (Newton Inventory No. Al.3). The figure is 19th century or before, 13 1/2” (34.3 cm) in height and the price is available upon request.
