Washkuk Yena Figure--Kwoma Culture-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
This is a massive and ancient yena figure from the Kwoma culture of the Washkuk area north of the middle Sepik River that I was lucky to acquire this from a Long Island estate recently. I love the remains of pigments, the huge pendulous nose pierced and decorated with a shell sliver, the gentle concave of the lower portion—delicate like a leaf or seashell. The backside is figurative as well with the sharp hook serving as the nose. Note the obvious wear and weathering—but the piece is very solid. It dates to the 1920/30s, stands 75” (190.4 cm) in height. SOLD
