New Ireland Hornbill Mouth Ornament-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a fine New Ireland hornbill ornament called a “Vatlam” held in the mouth and used in dances related to Malagan ceremonies. This one is exceptional for the openwork around the eye and the bold blue pigments. It comes from a Frankfurt Germany private collection, dates to the late 19th/early 20th century, is 16” (40.8 cm) in length. SOLD
