Solomon Islands Supe Club, Malaita, Melanesian Art, Oceanic Art
You have to love South Pacific weapons. They often combine a rather elegant overall form with rich glossy surfaces on top of beautifully grained hardwood—all with the unmistakable intent of causing grievous bodily harm. The supe clubs from Maliata Island in the Solomon Islands perfectly exemplify this standard. This one comes from the estate of Lynda Cunningham, is truly ancient with both a great shape and a wonderful surface. It dates to the 19th century, is 30 1/8” (76.3 cm) in height and sells for $3800.
