One of three known Massim or Collingwood Bay Ceremonial House Post, a Rare Top-quality piece of Oceanic Art
One of only three known, this is a rare Massim culture house post from the Cape Vogel area, the very southern limit of the Collingwood Bay area of Oro Province. It was collected by a German field collector in 1990 from Boga Boga village. One of the three posts went into the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede. Carved from an extremely heavy dense hardwood this house post has seen generations of use. The stacked, layered carved sections aesthetically corresponds more closely to that of Collingwood Bay in my opinion. The piece dates to the 19th century, is 66 ½” (168.9 cm) in height. Price is $7500. Questions?
