My dear brother Greg passed away on January 23, 2022. Here he is in Tufi, Collingwood Bay, with a couple local guys and our good friend Raymond Kuaru from Bukitu village in West Yangoru—looks as if they are just back from a patrol down the coast—April 2007.

Nice Kikori area drum, Papuan Gulf, circa 2008.
These crappy make-shift bridges wouldn’t be so bad if it were not for the fact that these swamps were often loaded with crocodiles.
Typical village, up river, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.
Quite a nice Kikori area drum, Papuan Gulf, circa 2008, photo by Greg Hamson.
Collingwood Bay is really beautiful with steep tropical fjords coming straight down into the tropical waters.
Nice haul of Abelam wooden yam masks. No masterpieces, but authentic used examples.
Oro Province coast, Papua New Guinea, circa 2007.
If you field collect in the Papuan Gulf expect A LOT of mud. My man Jerry Kudud with cap.
Notice the Christian cross off in the distance—Collingwood Bay, Oro Province, Photo by Greg Hamson, 2007.
Yet another dodgy bridge built for nimble 120 lb. local folks—not clumsy 230 lb. Americans.

Fantastic Southern Abelam balsawood yam mask with great colors and form—this one is still in the field to my knowledge.
Telefomin Shield - NewGuineaArt-OceanicTribalArt
There is still some fight left in this old New Guinea warrior from the Amanab area, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Stooped with age, brandishing the long bamboo arrows used in battle and wearing the traditional penis gourd—nothing fancy here, just a plain undecorated version the size and shape of a goose egg, circa 2001/2.
Massive hand drum or kundu from the remote Finisterre Mountains, border of Madang and Morobe Provinces, Papua New Guinea. Teptep area, circa 2004.
Telefomin war shield painted design on door of a more modern village house, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004.
Surveying the days trek through the mountains, Telefomin area, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
Making the pandanus delicacy in the Star Mountains, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
Cooling my heels, field collecting in Papua New Guinea, West Sepik Province, circa 2004/5.
Inspecting two nice Telefomin doorboards, amitung, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Pretty sure I bought both of them.
My friend Alan Grinnell sporting a nice new feather cap, Telefomin area, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004/5.
Telefomin doorboard reduced to a decorative motif on a more modern village house, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004/5.
Not sure exactly what I am looking at here—probably some items of personal decoration. Obviously not overwhelmed by what I see, Telefomin area, circa 2004/5.
One of my main men, Raymond Kuaru in blue shirt and cap inspecting a nice Telefomin doorboard, amitung, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004/5.
Walking through Telefomin station with nice but not ancient war shield, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004/5.
Old Telefomin doorboard, amitung, still in use. Creates a secure, warm interior in this high mountain valley, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004/5.
Umboi Island mask, authentic but recent, probably from the 1970s, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea circa 1997.
Old West Yangoru Abelam culture ancestral spirit figure, discarded in the bush, left to rot, and retrieved when I was in the area asking to buy artifacts. Papua New Guinea, circa 1996/7.
Picturesque Vokeo Island toilet, “the long drop”, with a school of hungry fish always ready waiting below. Papua New Guinea, circa 1995.
Large Abelam cane yam mask of elegant open construction. Not the most ancient but quite nicely done, displayed with pride circa 1994.
Nice old Teptep area drum with animal skin top, Finisterre Mountains, border of Madang and Morobe Provinces, Papua New Guinea.
An old Lumi shield brought out with pride. This is how many artifacts are in the field—covered in layers of dirt, mold and with water damage from leaks in the bush material roof. But if you look close you can discern traces of the traditional design.
Demonstration of the proper fighting technique in the Telefomin area—takes two men—one to hold the shield and a man behind him shooting arrows. Beautiful old shield—still in the field.
On a long walk in the remote Bewani Mountains, to the west of Lumi going towards the West Papuan border. Nice old shield secured, circa 2004.
Typical West Sepik village, Torricelli Mountains, Papua New Guinea—circa 1998.
Can’t say I recall what river we are heading up—looks like a tributary of the Upper Fly River north of Lake Murray, Western Province, Papua New Guinea.
In the Kukukuku area, interesting region at the border of Eastern Highlands, Morobe and Gulf Provinces. Looks like we are heading out of a village ready for the next. I am holding quite a nice painting war club. The bow and arrows the other men are holding are for protection and hunting while on the trail—not things I purchased—circa 2006/7.
Heading up the mouth of the Musa River, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. Storm clouds in the distance portend a vastly different situation up ahead. The river will flood, swell with mud and uprooted trees and make travelling upstream impossible. But for now, smooth sailing, circa 2005.
Papua New Guinea’s Musa River swollen with fresh rain and mud starting to force its way to the coast. Not long after this photo the river became too rough, too fast and dangerous with full uprooted trees that threatened to overturn our boat. Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2005. Field Collecting New Guinea art.
Boar’s tusk mouth ornament typical of the Collingwood Bay area, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2005.
My good friend and long-time field collector Jerry Kudud idling just off the rocks in front of my old house, hidden in the trees, on Wewak Point, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2005.

The young and the old, pretty young girl from Umboi Island holding an ancient Tami/Siassi Island bowl, circa 1999.
Where there is no bridge, make one. Hiring some local guys to put up a flimsy makeshift bridge across a small river. It looks reasonably tame in the photo but as I recall we went to all that trouble because it was too dangerous to cross on foot.
Blowing the horn, Schouten Islands, Papua New Guinea, circa 1997.
Sepik Plains, Papua New Guinea, circa 2000.
Two Old Lower Sepik River Masks, circa 1995
High up the volcanic slope of Umboi Island are some small villages obviously off the beaten path of previous field collectors because back in the 1990s I came across some superb ancient Tami Island bowls. The relief carved crocodile motif is almost effaced from wear and encrusted patina.
After a rainstorm, Collingwood Bay area, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2005.
Ingenious use of a hornbill beak, Mountain Ok people, Central Mountain Range, Papua New Guinea, circa 2005.
The infamous Alois Jim on the right, Kairiru Island, Papua New Guinea. For all his shenanigans he did find some good things over the years. Circa 1999.
Misty morning, remote area of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, circa 2004.
Maybe you’ve heard the name…Jeff Liversidge. Now you know the face. Jeff was a serious field collector and is very knowledgeable about New Guinea art. After his field collecting days he concentrated on making some world-class fakes. Photo by Mike Glad, circa 2010.
Ah yes, now this is what one hopes to encounter in the bush—a nice, clear, dry, FLAT path by a meandering brook, close at hand if you want to take a cooling dip. Alas, very scarce are such pleasant trekking conditions.
Nice stone disc club head and old neckrest—notice wire repair—Collingwood Bay, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. Equally visually interesting is the green from the shirt contrasting with the red betel-stained lips.
The tapa from the remote Finisterre Mountains is some of the most beautiful and aesthetically sophisticated of Papua New Guinea. This tri-fold example would have been wrapped around a boxy structure hung from the shoulders by straps to encase the hips.
Most people don’t realize I started my career in the PhD program of African Art History and UC Santa Barbara. It was my professor Skip Cole who pointed out the obvious one day at lunch “you don’t have to have a PhD in African Art do be an Oceanic Art dealer.” He realized what I hadn’t, and I will always be in his debt for helping with that decision. Skip went with me once to Papua New Guinea and this is my one photo of the trip, circa 2004.
A bounty of bone daggers. Quite the successful haul from a four-day trip west of Maprik that all began by happenstance. Our truck broke down well past Maprik on our way to Lumi in the West Sepik. As we waited alongside the road for my driver to fix the vehicle I began an easy, unrushed conversation with some of the village men nearby. I told them that I was from America and that I go around buying artifacts. “What kind of artifacts?” they ask. I go into my spiel, “figures, masks, shields, drums, wooden pillows, bowls, plates, bone daggers…” One of the men said he had a bone dagger, then another man had one, then another... We ended up staying several days canvassing all the surrounding villages. Some real beauties were found.
Thank God for Kundu Drums. When field collecting it was near impossible to find older, used ritual figures and masks. When coming into a new remote village and asking for artifacts often the request fell on deaf ears. I was always told “Sorry, we don’t have such things.” I always responded “No kundu drums? Old ones in the rafters with broken lizard skin tops?” Well, yes, we might have some of those…That would often get the ball rolling when I laid real cash money in someone’s hand for something everyone else thought was useless. You could then see people peel off from the group and head into their rafters to see what they could find. Then the real fun would begin. Here is a fine old Coastal Ramu River drum. Quite a nice one.
The intriguing part of field collecting was coming across objects yet unknown in the corpus of New Guinea art. This happened OFTEN. Such as this interesting unusual clay pot.
Another great thing about field collecting was coming across ancient things that you would swear came from one area—like this suspension hook figure—that would seem Sawos or Middle Sepik River. But in reality this comes from the far southern Abelam area. It is pre-contact, stone-carved and must be a historical remnant from the people’s migration north from the Sepik several hundred years ago.
When buying nose pieces in remote villages there always seems to be an old man more than willing to show me and everyone else around how these were worn in the past. Sure the guy’s pierced septum was nearly closed from not wearing a nose piece for decades but that never stopped them from giving it their best shot. You can see the pride in this guy’s eyes.
Beautiful old figurative finals from Manam Island Garamut slit-gong drums.
Once you construct one of these ad-hoc, make-shift bridges you always send the lightest guy across first, then the next heaviest until it was my turn. I often preferred to swim.
Here you get a sense of the power a hornbill headdress projected when worn. Collingwood Bay area, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.
Two old and wonderful Collingwood Bay lime spatulas. Right example is of the rare “wange nua” hook style.
Here I am while the men take a smoke break. You can see the guy rolling his tobacco in a torn piece of newspaper. I am looking, somewhat impatiently it seems, at my man Raymond Kuaru from Bukitu village. We worked together nearly 15 years.
Yes, all too common New Guinea “road.” A muddy slog up and a slippery one down. Your shoes would be caked with pounds of mud that was heavy going uphill and acted like roller-skates going down. Before starting such a day I would call out “stick!’ and someone would go into the bush and hack out a stout walking stick for me to use. Invaluable.
