The large slig gong “Garamut” drums of the Torricelli Mountains in Papua New Guinea’s West Sepik Province are some of the least known objects of New Guinea art. But look at the elegant, unusual shape. I ended up bringing a number of these out from this remote areas—buying them and asking the owners to carry them to the road some hours to the south. They often road them like a toboggan down the muddy mountain trails. Photo by Jim Sanders circa 2007.
