When field collecting in Papua New Guinea I would often take a small missionary aircraft to a remote grass airstrip, get dropped off and immediately start asking around for some men to help carry gear and lead the way to the surrounding villages--sometimes a week's walk away. Here is a typical set of young men hired to do the job. It is often welcome work as cash is hard to come by for typical village youths and there is often a sense of adventure that appeals to them.
