Teptep man with tapa cloth, New Guinea Art, Oceanic Art, Tribal Art, South Pacific Art
In the remote Finisterre Mountains men produce beautiful tapa waist cloths and capes with bold designs and colors. They are composed with strict rules that make them, in the words of Christin Kocher Schmid, "magical picture puzzles." There is a great article in my book, "Between the Known and Unknown: New Guinea Art from Astrolabe Bay to Morobe" that details this art practice.
