Failed Crossing of the Sikau River, New Guinea Art, Oceanic Art, South Pacific Art, Tribal Art
The small rivers that cross the main road from Wewak to Maprik are normally easily traversed. Yet, after a decent rain they swell and become impassible. Vehicles stack up on either side of the river waiting for the waters to recede enough to cross. Occasionally somebody gets impatient and to the delight of all onlookers tries to ford the raging waters. I was the entertainment this day with my crew of guys in a rented truck that made it just halfway before filling with water. Luckily a bulldozer was nearby and pushed us out the other side. Avis was not amused when I returned their vehicle a week later smelling of mold and destroyed backend.
