South Pacific art objects and artifacts | betel mortar
I love the monumental quality to this New Guinea betel mortar. Judging from the style of the face I would attribute this to the Rai Coast of Morobe Province as it heads west towards Astrolabe Bay. The mortar is published in my new catalog entitled “By Descent: Oceanic Art from Old Collections, Paris 2019.” It comes from the collection of Gregory Ghent in Santa Fe and then Jim Haas of San Francisco. The mortar dates to the early 20th century, is 9” (22.9 cm) in height and sells for $6500. Questions?
